Dr. Beth Reaves joined WSG as President in the fall of 2017, succeeding co-founder Sr. Mary Bourdon, RJM following her 20 years of visionary leadership. Prior to WSG, Dr. Reaves was Head of School at Friends School Mullica Hill in NJ.

When I joined the Washington School for Girls six months ago, everyone in our community knew more about the school than I did. How might I understand the school in a way that would help me as a new leader?

The answer has been simple: Ask. So I met with our constituencies as a way to hear insight and perspectives on the school.

What I’ve learned:

The mission of WSG is compelling. It draws employees, donors, and families to our school. WSG is a place where our students feel valued and are encouraged to share their voice with the world.

Change is critical to organizational growth. In recent years, WSG has expanded and adapted in ways that further the school mission, support students’ needs, and move WSG towards the future. We should remember that while change can be hard, it is also crucial for positive growth.

Our world and our understanding of education is constantly changing. How do we support our girls ten years from now? What is working? What isn’t? Asking hard questions and embracing the discussion is a necessary exercise.

I’ve enjoyed getting to know the WSG community during my quest for learning. I am working each day to build on the school’s successful foundation, while also keeping an eye on the future.
