Cristo Rey NY Seniors Celebrate on College Recognition Day

July 8, 2019

Dan Dougherty, President, Cristo Rey New York High School

Every year, on the last day of classes for seniors, Cristo Rey New York High School celebrates what we call “College Recognition Day.” Seniors reveal to the entire school community the college or university they will be attending. This school gathering is a joyful occasion for all of us to celebrate their success together. It is also one of the most exciting days of the school year, and this year was no different!

On May 22, the Class of 2019 came to school decked out in all their college gear, ready to show off where they are headed in the fall. The ceremony began with a slideshow of photos from the past four years, allowing the seniors to laugh and reminisce on how far they have come since their freshmen year. Then, each of our 82 seniors walked across the stage announcing his/her college to an audience of students, faculty, and staff, eager with anticipation. We are excited to have a few “firsts” this year, including Joelis, who will be attending the University of Pennsylvania on a full scholarship, and Sam, who is heading off to Davidson College after falling in love with the school during a Cristo Rey-sponsored summer program. Hillary, who is joining a long line of CRNYHS graduates at Fordham University, will be a trailblazer in her own way as our first student to study dance with the Alvin Ailey BFA Program. We could not be prouder of our students as they head into this exciting next chapter in their education. Congratulations to the CRNYHS Class of 2019!
