Every week, Casa Cornelia staff witness the gratitude and joy of clients who receive their humanitarian visas as a result of the legal pro bono work of volunteer and staff attorneys. One of these recent success stories is that of Josefina*, who at the age of 15 left the Mexican countryside to live with family in the U.S., where she met Eric, whom she eventually married.

For a while, everything was fine. Josefina got pregnant, but a few months before her due date, Eric became violent. His alcoholism and drug use made him erratic, causing him to become verbally and physically abusive. If she complained or cried out, he would threaten to have her deported.

One day, after standing up to him, he threatened to call the police and claim she was kidnapping their son. For Josefina, this was the last straw. She decided to report this incident to the police and fled the house with her baby.

She contacted Casa Cornelia for help. Associate Attorney Evelyn Lopez argued Josefina’s case, and her legal permanent residence was approved. Now, Josefina can be independent and safe to live peacefully with her son.

Your support makes this possible for women like Josefina and their families. Thank you for continuing to advocate for indigent families, and for changing their life by providing hope, access to justice, and humanitarian protection.
