Holy Child School Cape Coast Celebrates 80 Years

Holy Child School celebrated its 80th anniversary with the theme “80 Years of Developing Globally Impactful Women of Substance”. The celebration started on March 4th 2026 with homecoming of the past students (HOPSANS) from all over Ghana, USA and UK among others. The current students and staff gave a rousing welcome with songs, dances and beautiful displays to the past students. On 5th March, the actual date of the school’s founding by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, a Foundation Day Mass was celebrated, presided over by the school chaplain, Rev. Fr. George Atta Baidoo.

Present at the Mass were Sisters of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, from Ghana and Nigeria. The school was blessed to have Sr. Veronica Openibo, a past tutor and Sr. Sophia Chizo Onuora, a past student of 1972 year group and a past tutor 0f Holy Child School, Sr. Philomena Aidoo and Sr. Louisa Huni-Dadzie also past students among others.

Past students, especially the 2001 year group, current students, friends, and well-wishers also participated in the celebration. After the inspiring Mass, the 2001 year group, who served as the organizing group, presented their legacy project to the school—an uninterrupted water supply system. On 6 March, past and present students participated in an exciting and joyful float through the principal streets of Cape Coast, drawing the community into the celebration.
The festivities continued on Saturday, 7 March, with the school’s colourful Speech and Prize-Giving Day. The event was attended by several dignitaries from both Church and State. The Vice President of Ghana, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, graced the occasion. The guest speaker was Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, a HOPSAN and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon.

In their remarks, the speakers and past students reflected on the profound impact the Society of the Holy Child Jesus has had on Holy Child School, particularly in fostering discipline, a legacy of academic excellence, and a tradition of guidance and inspiration that has transcended generations.
The celebration concluded on Sunday, 8 March, with an inspiring, joyful, and interactive Mass.
