The school provides a caring and safe environment for young girls who are living in an underserved urban area and are at risk of leaving school prematurely.<\/p>\n<p>Today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonschoolforgirls.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Washington School for Girls<\/a>\u00a0serves approximately 130\u00a0girls in grades three\u00a0through eight in the Anacostia area of Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"large-6 medium-6 columns\" style=\"background-color: #ffffe0\">\n<h3>One student&#8217;s journey<\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"align none lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.shcj.org\/american\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/07\/WMSGphoto-stock2.jpg\" alt=\"WMSGphoto-stock2\" width=\"100%\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 192px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 192\/179;\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>A hard worker and talented dancer with college aspirations, Stephanie was ecstatic when she was awarded a full scholarship to a Midwest liberal arts college. Unfortunately, her family did not share her enthusiasm and could not offer the emotional support and technical guidance so critical to her transition to college. Her dream took flight with the Graduate Support Program of the Washington School for Girls, which assumed the role of surrogate parent, providing the advice, encouragement, and guidance that eased her transition from the inner city of Washington D.C. to a college in the rural Midwest.
