Becoming A Holy Child Sister

“The invitation comes from God, and to him you must give your answer. Don’t talk about what you are going to do for God, but reflect on what God is doing for you.” ~ Cornelia Connelly

Entering a religious order is a lifelong commitment. And while some think you become a sister overnight—that is not the case! Before you take vows in the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, you go through a step-by-step process designed to help you determine if religious life, and especially, religious life in the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, is right for you. Specifically, the process includes:

Inquiry (1-3 years)

During inquiry, you explore what it means to be a follower of Christ, discern if God is inviting you to live your baptismal commitment in a new way, and consider if you are called to the way the Sisters of the Holy Child live. You undertake spiritual direction and come to know the Holy Child Sisters through joining with them in retreats, study groups, and days of prayer.

Candidacy (6 months-2 years)

Living in community with Holy Child Sisters, you gain a greater understanding of the Society’s mission and spirit while discerning God’s call and your response to it.

Novitiate (2 years)

During novitiate, you experience fully the life and spirituality of the Society and undertake 12 months of intensive spiritual training while discerning your desire and capability for making a vowed commitment in the Society. You become involved in ministry and share in all aspects of the Society’s life.

Temporary Profession Leading to Perpetual Profession (3-5 years)

Temporary Profession begins with taking vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience for five years. You continue to discern God’s call during these years while being fully immersed in the life of the Society and moving toward perpetual vows.
