On Tuesday, December 2nd, Cristo Rey New York High School celebrated its Founders’ legacy with the annual Founders Day Mass and Freshman Service Day. The Mass, presided over by Fr. James Ferus, was a powerful reflection on service, faith, and community. Students from the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice (IFTJ) wrote the homily, sharing insights that connected the school’s mission to the real-world impact of service and compassion. Freshmen actively participated as altar servers, gift bearers, greeters, and Eucharistic ministers, bringing energy and dedication to the liturgy.

Following the Mass, our 9th graders embarked on a Day of Service, traveling throughout New York City to learn from and serve their communities. Students engaged in a variety of activities, including visiting nursing home residents at ArchCare, organizing food banks at Hour Children and LSA Family Health Services, and assisting with multiple Catholic Charities programs. Through these experiences, students not only supported local organizations but also deepened their understanding of the school’s core values of service, justice, and faith in action.

A heartfelt thanks goes to our dedicated teacher chaperones and our enthusiastic freshmen for keeping the spirit of our Founders alive. By celebrating the legacy of Cristo Rey New York through prayer, reflection, and service, this day reminded the entire community of the transformative power of faith and the meaningful impact of giving back.
